The Greater Toronto Area (locally abbreviated as the GTA) is the most populous metropolitan area in Canada. The GTA is a provincial planning area with a population of 5,555,912 at the 2006 Canadian Census. The Greater Toronto Area is the 7th largest metropolitan area in North America. In addition to the City of Toronto, it includes the Regional Municipalities of York, Halton, Peel and Durham as its shown in the map of Toronto area. The GTA is home to a number of post-secondary educational institutions, including 4 universities and 7 colleges.
 
The Region of Durham is situated in the highly developed and populated economic centre of Ontario. Durham Region lies immediately to the east of the City of Toronto within the Greater Toronto Area and encompasses an area of approximately 2,590 square kilometres (1,000 square miles) as its mentioned in map of Toronto area. The area is characterized by a variety of landscapes and communities. Located less than an hour drive from Toronto and Niagara, Halton covers over 967 square kilometres, including 25 kilometres of frontage on beautiful Lake Ontario. Halton current population is approximately 500,000 and is projected to reach a population of 628,900 by the year 2021, with annual increases fluctuating between 12,000 and 14,000.
 
Peel Region is located in Southern Ontario, on the north shore of Lake Ontario, between the City of Toronto and York Region to the east and Halton Region to the west as you can see in the map of Toronto area. Peel is a part of the Greater Toronto Area. The Region has an area of 1254 square kilometres and is made up of cities of Brampton, Mississauga and the Town of Caledon. At the heart of the Province of Ontario is the City of Toronto. Toronto is the provincial capital and is in many ways the economic engine for the entire country. It is the financial centre of Canada, the 3rd largest financial centre in North America, employing 205,000 in the financial sector. York Region covers 1,776 square kilometres and stretches from Lake Simcoe in the north to Steeles Avenue in the south. It borders Simcoe County and Peel Region in the west and Durham Region in the east.
